- More than 200 pages
- More than 500 sub-suppliers are identified
The is the fourth issue of BTM Consult's bi-annual Supply Chain Assessment and also the most comprehensive supply chain report BTM has ever done.
The assessment has found that slower-than-expected economic recovery in the U.S. combined with the eurozone sovereign debt crisis and most recently Chinese government’s effort to "overhaul" the local wind industry have completely transformed the supply chain into a situation where overcapacity is the case for most key components and materials and turbine prices have dropped to a level where both OEMs and sub-suppliers are failing to see profitability.
This is a tough time for the industry and restructuring is under way! The wind industry has entered a stage where strategic decision making is needed. How can the suppliers of components and materials survive this new reality? What are the latest supply chain management strategies of the world’s top 10 turbine OEMs as a response to slumping demand? This 200+ page supply chain assessment, with the updated status of supply chain activities as of November 2011, addresses these questions.
This Supply Chain Assessment reviews eight key components, five groups of key materials and a specific study of offshore balance of plant.
Key components included in the study: Key materials included in the study:
Blades Castings
Gearboxes Forgings
Electric Generators Reinforcement fibres
Bearings Resins
Power Converters Rare-earth materials
Transformers
Towers
Pitch Systems
Note: Wind power pitch system suppliers have been included for the first time and the supply chain study for blade materials (resins and fibres) has also been extended. As a consequence of the increased use of direct drive turbine designs (noted in the WMU 2010 report), the supply of direct drive technology and the special materials used for permanent magnet generators - the so-called “rare earth materials” - has also been investigated.
